Grenade explosion in Vavuniya, civilian killed, seven wounded

A civilian was killed and seven persons, including a Sri Lanka Army soldier, were wounded near Vavuniya bus stand around 3:45 p.m. Wednesday in a grenade explosion that took place on the pavement, Vavuniya Police said.

The civilian killed was identified as Mr. Subramaniam Yogaputhiran from Olumadu in Mankulam.

The wounded, Ms. Baskaran Kamelswari, 36, Mr. Maheswaran Kamalarooban, 21, Mr. Thambirajah Chandrabose, 30, Jerald Neelameham, 25, and the SLA soldier Mr. Prasanna Jayathilake, 22, were rushed to Vavuniya Hospital. Names of the two others wounded in the incident were not available at the moment.

Vavuniya District Judge Mr. Manickavasagar Ilancheliyan has visited the site and ordered an investigation into the incident.
