Chavakachcheri Police post comes under attack

Chavakachcheri police post in Thenmaradchy came under grenade attack and small-arms fire at 8.30 p.m. Thursday, sources in Jaffna said. Police returned fire from their positions inside the Police station premises and the firefight lasted for more than 15 minutes, according to sources. No injuries were reported.

Additional reinforcements of troops rushed to the Kodikamam- Kachchai road area where the police post is located but the gunmen had vacated the area by then, sources said.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Army (SLA) arrested a youth in Nunavil along the Kandy-Jaffna Road around 9 p.m. Thursday. He was one of the two riding in a motorbike when they were stopped. Sources said, the other youth escaped in the motorbike amid gunfire from the troops. He may have been seriously injured, according to reports from the area.

Further, at around 8.30 p.m. Thursday, the Police Post located in front of the Old Bus Stand at entrance to the High Security Zone (HSZ) in Point Pedro, also came under grenade attack. Further details of this incident are not available at this time.

In the general search of houses in Kachchai, Chavakachcheri area Thursday morning, the Kodikamam Police arrested two civilians accused of hiding hand grenades in their homes. The arrested were produced in Chavakachcheri court Thursday afternoon. The Judge has ordered remand till Monday, sources said.
