A Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) Dvora fast attack craft has been reported missing off the coast of Trincomalee, naval sources said. A big explosion was heard off the coast of Foul Point around 2.30 a.m. Saturday, police in the eastern port town said. A statement issused by the Sri Lanka Army said two survivors of the crew have been found and thirteen are still missing and the Dvora has sunk without any traces. Liberation Tigers' media spokesperson Daya Master, speaking to TamilNet from Kilinochchi, said that LTTE has no involvement in the explosion.

DVORA

Super Dvora Mk III, is developed by Israel Aircraft Industries' RAMTA division. The 26 m' boat has a displacement of 70 tons and is capable of operations at extended range and durations (96 hours), 700 – 1,000 nm range depending on mission profile. The boat is offered with two diesel engine types – developing 1,120 kW or 1,680 kW, each powering the articulating ASD system. Super Dvora can develop top speed in excess of 43 knots at full displacement. At a normal load, the boat has a draft of 0.9 m, and displacement of 53 tons. The ASD propulsion system provides this Extra Fast Attack Craft (XFAC) with the excellent shallow water capability, including beaching, exceptional manoeuvring & survivability, high redundancy, rapid acceleration and de-acceleration, high stability and excellent sea-keeping qualities.

"Nearby fishermen pulled two sailors alive from the water after the pre-dawn attack on the fast attack craft just outside Trincomalee naval harbour, and the Navy was searching for the rest of the crew, all initially feared to have perished," Reuters report further said.

"We believe it was a Tiger suicide mission. The dvora was completely destroyed," Reuters report quoted Navy spokesperson Commodore Jayantha Perera as saying. The details of the incident were still sketchy and the Navy was still looking for the 13 missing, Reuters report further said quoting the Navy spokesperson.
