The demand for milk per day in the Jaffna district is about 125,000 litres, but only 25,000 litres are produced. To bridge the gap in demand and supply every farmer in the district should rear at least a cow, appealed Dr.P.Ramanathan, Assistant Director of the Department of Animal Husbandry in the district at an event held to honor best farmers recently.
"We have lost our agriculture resources for the last two decades. About ninety percent of the Jaffna district population is in one way or other connected with agriculture and animal husbandry. Hence every one should make an effort to rear a cow, two goats in their lands," said Dr.P.Ramanathan. "Jaffna District Production and Development Co-operative Society has been handling about 3000 liters of milk for distribution daily. But we have taken steps to increase our target to 12 thousand litres from next month. "We have allocated a sum of Rupees 1.2 million rupees for this project," said Dr.P.Ramanathan.
