TRO(USA) to hold tsunami anniversary fund raiser

Tamils Rehabilitation Organization (USA) is holding its annual fund raiser at the cultural hall of Murugan Temple in Lanham, located 20 km north east of US capitol, Saturday. Voluntary contributions from families are earmarked for the Senthalir Illam in Mullaitivu where more than seventy children perished during the tsunami, organizers of the event said. Cultural events from local children will dominate the evening as a mark of respect for the Senthalir children.

"We were overwhelmed by the response of the donors after tsuanmi, and are grateful for the local volunteers who helped to mitigate our administrative load. We will be continuing our tsunami project until all the tsunami displaced in NorthEast have found permanent homes," said Dr Ranjithan, President of TRO(USA).

The organization collected nearly $1.5m in the aftermath of tsunami and disbursed the full amount to TRO (Sri Lanka) which is registered as an NGO with the Government of Sri Lanka for helping the tsunami affected in the NorthEast, TRO officials said.

Charity Navigator, a US-based independent evaluator which evaluates the financial health of charities in philanthropic marketplace, gave TRO second consecutive "highest 4-star rating for sound fiscal management," according to TRO officials.

Sunera Foundation partnership

Meanwhile, in a press release issued in Colombo Monday, TRO said, "Sunethra Bandaranaike, Chairperson of the Sunera Foundation paid a courtesy call to the Colombo office of the Tamils Rehabilitation Organization on Thursday 12 January 2006. She met with senior staff TRO Project Development and Management staff, and discussed the work of the Sunera Foundation. Particular emphasis was placed on the Sunera Foundation’s Tsunami Theatre Outreach Project, which works with tsunami and war affected “differently abled” populations. Ms. Bandaranaike explored the possibilities for the Foundation to work with TRO in the NorthEast."
