The funeral of Major Kapilan, a senior Liberation Tigers cadre, who was killed in an ambush attack, allegedly carried out by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers and paramilitary cadres Thursday in Vadamunai in Batticaloa district, was held in Tharavai war heroes' cemetery, 70 km Northwest of Batticaloa town Friday.
"It was the Sri Lankan armed forces that opted to wage a covert war on us. Again, despite their pledges to Norwegian facilitators, they want to provocate us," said Oviyan, LTTE's Kudambimalai Kotam area coordinator, who addressed the mourners gathered to pay tribute to the slain LTTE cadre.
Col. Bhanu, LTTE's Special Commander of Batticaloa District, Commander Nagesh, Mr. Keerthi, LTTE's Batticaloa District Intelligence Chief, and the LTTE's Political Head of Batticaloa District, Mr. Daya Mohan, and several other LTTE officials and cadres attended the funeral ceremony at Tharavai.
Major Kapilan (Ponnaiah Velupillai), 33, from Thikiliveddai, was a senior cadre who had served the movement for 15 years, Oviyan added.
Kapilan, who was in charge of the border villages, had participated in LTTE's Unceasing Waves military operation against the Sri Lankan forces' Jeysikurui operation, Oviyan noted.
His body was taken in procession from the grounds of Thikiliveddai Mixed School to the burial site at Tharavai Heroes' cemetary and was burried with military honours.
Kapilan leaves behind his wife and a child.
