Kalmunai tsunami-affected schools to be developed

The year 2006 has been declared Kalmunai Education Development Year to rebuild schools destroyed and damaged in tsunami disaster in December 2004. 214 schools function in the Kalmunai education district which comprises three education zones, Akkaraipattu, Kalmunai and Sammanthurai, sources said.

Of the three zones, schools in Kalmunai zones suffered heavy damage in tsunami. 24 schools were completely destroyed and 15 schools partially damaged. 16 teachers and 1165 students died in the tsunami. 136 students lost both parents. 452 students lost one of their parents, education sources said.

Hence the Zonal Director of Kalmunai has formulated a special plan to rebuild tsunami-destroyed schools and to improve the standard of education, which suffered following the natural disaster, sources said.
