Wild elephants are reported on rampage in the deserted village Kappalthurai destroying houses and other plantations and cultivations with the displacement of entire families due to the violence and killings, which erupted in Trincomalee town on April 12 with the bomb explosion and followed by arson. Kappalthurai located along Trincomalee-Kandy about 10 km off southwest of Trincomalee town is a resettled village fled in the 1985 disturbances, sources said.
Displaced Kappalthurai villagers are now housed in Kappalthurai School, Kinniya School and in temporary shelters put up in a playground in Vellamanal. Kappalthurai-Chinabay Al-Aqsa Jumma Mosque administration has now appealed to the government authorities to provide adequate compensation to the displaced villagers of Kappalthurai for their damaged properties, houses and plantations by wild elephants, sources said.
