Murunkan Police OIC kills sergeant

Mannar Magistrate Mr.N.M.M.Abdulla Wednesday ordered for the arrest of the Officer-in-Charge of the Murunkan Police Sector who is alleged to have shot dead a police sergeant Shantha Premakumara (42) on Tuesday evening 5.30 p.m., legal sources said.

The Magistrate Wednesday morning visited the scene of crime and inspected the body of the deceased. It transpired at the inquiry that the suspect, another policeman, and Premakumara were drinking at the time of the incident.

Following a heated argument the suspect had fired with his 9 mm pistol on the head of the deceased. The deceased died on the spot, legal sources said.

The Magistrate further ordered the Medical Superintendent of the Mannar General Hospital to conduct postmortem examination and submit the report to the court, legal sources said.

The suspect police officer is to be produced before the Mannar Magistrate late in the evening, legal sources said.
