Plot foiled - paper

The Terrorist Investigation Division (TID) of the Police Department has discovered a plot to assassinate Sri Lanka President Chandrika Kumaratunga, the Sunday Times reported today.

This was revealed by "LTTE suicide cadre Ganesh Thanmani. This has led to the arrests of eight others, including three journalists," the newspaper said.

The attack was to have taken place when President Kumaratunga took part in a Hindu cultural programme.

The Terrorist Investigation Department (TID), formed two months ago, arrested recently two Tamil journalists and a senior government official, Mr. K. Theivanayagam.
