Policeman shot dead in Kallady, Batticaloa

Unidentified gunman shot dead policeman Shanmugam Kannathasan, 38, attached to Batticaloa police station Wednesday evening around 7.10 p.m, fifty meters from the Kallady bridge on the Kalmunai-Batticaloa road police check post in Batticaloa town, said Batticaloa police.

Mr. Kannathasan, a resident of Batticaloa and one of the three policemen on duty at the Kallady bridge check post, was shot dead on his way to get water from the water tap across the road, sources said.

The gunman escaped after the shooting.

Kannathasan's body is kept at the Batticaloa hospital morgue.

Batticaloa police are investing into the shooting.

Kallady is located 3 km south of Batticaloa town.
