SLA soldier killed in Eluthumadduval claymore attack

One Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldier was killed and two soldiers seriously injured in a claymore attack on their vehicle inside SLA controlled High Security Zone (HSZ) north of Muhamalai checkpoint at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, sources in Jaffna said. The injured soldiers have been taken to the Palaly Military Hospital, according to sources.

The attack happened in a non-residential area interior to Kandy-Jaffna A9 highway in Eluthumadduval area between Mirusuvil and Muhamalai.

The claymore targetted a pickup truck regularly used by high-level officers of the SLA, sources said.

The soldier killed was travelling in the rear seat of the vehicle. Unconfirmed reports say the two injured in the explosion are high-level officers of the SLA.

Following the 2000 fighting large areas of Eluthumattuval were made into HSZ and number of families were displaced from the area. Eluthumadduval links with Nagarkovil in the Vadamaradchy east coast forming the southern boundry of SLA Forward Defense Lines (FDLs), and the SLA had taken extensive measures to strengthen security in the area.
