Eastern volunteer teachers demand permanency

The Eastern Province Volunteer Teachers' Union (EPVTU) Monday launched a protest fast on rotation basis in front of the Zonal Education Office in Kalmunai in the Amparai district demanding permanent appointment to all volunteer teachers who have been working for about ten years without payment or any allowances, union officials said.

About five hundred volunteer teachers serving in schools in Kalmunai. Akkaraipattu, Sammanthurai and Paddiruppu are participating in the protest fast.

EPVTU officials said they would continue their fasting on rotation basis until the education authorities give an undertaking in writing that all volunteer teachers would be made permanent without any discrimination, and without any interview or written test.
