Trinco displaced endure endless wait for relief
[TamilNet, Tuesday, 04 July 2006, 14:03 GMT]
About 2,659 persons of 675 families displaced from Anpuvallipuram, Bharathipuram and Gandhinagar, suburbs of Trincomalee town, due to fear following killings, abduction and intimidation of Tamil civilians are sheltered in buildings of Chelvanayagapuram school and in a pre-school since beginning of May. But civil authorities have not taken any steps to provide any relief such as dry rations and other basic provisions, civil groups in the east port town complained Monday.

Anpuvallipuram, Bharathipuram and Gandhinagar come under the administration of the Trincomalee Town and Gravets.
About 1435 persons of 361 families from Anpuvallipuram, 216 persons of 57 families from Bharathipuram and 1008 persons of 257 families are sheltered in these schools.
Of the total displaced about 237 are children under the age of five. 1178 are men and 1244 women, civil society sources said.
Under the guidance of the UNHCR, the Social Development Centre, local Non Governmental Organization (NGO) involved in refugee rehabilitation, is now looking after the urgent needs of these displaced people, sources said.
Meanwhile, about 133 persons of 41 Tamil families displaced from Sivajoygapuram in Trincomalee DS division and112 persons of 43 Tamil families from Paalai Nagar in Muttur DS division following the outbreak of violence in Trincomalee town are also sheltered in the buildings of Varaothya Nagar School and Palaiyootu Poompuhar Rural Development Society.
They are also being looked after by the Social Development Centre. However government authorities in Trincomalee have failed to provide any assistance to these refugees, sources said.
Since 12 April this year when the violence broke out in Trincomalee town with bomb blast killing fifteen civilians of all three communities and thereafter Sinhalese hoodlum burnt houses of Tamil residents in Anpuvallipuram, Sivayogapuram and other Tamil settlements, Tamil civilians in large numbers moved out to schools and public buildings. Still they are living in schools and public buildings as refugees.
This displacement continues and there will be a surge in refugees when abduction, arrest and killing of Tamil civilians take place in the suburbs of Trincomalee town.
Recent abduction and killing of a Tamil civilian in Anpuvallipuram that took place two weeks ago also have forced Tamil population there to move out to Chelvanayagapuram schools.
