Police team records statements of Pesalai victims

Twelve member special police team led by an Assistant Superintendent of Police Tuesday commenced recording of statements from refugees present in the Church of Lady of Victories in Pesalai on June 17 when soldiers of the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) allegedly fired and threw grenades. In this incident an old woman was killed and about forty others were injured.

The team comprising five inspectors and six constables arrived in Mannar Monday and inspected the church and other sites affected by the violence.

Later on Tuesday the team summoned about fifteen refugees who witnessed the attack allegedly by navy personnel on June 17 to the Mannar police station and started recording their statements, sources said.

Statements from another batch of fifteen refugees are to be recorded on Wednesday, Mannar Police sources said.
