Around 200 members of the Jaffna District Graduates Union held a token fast within the Kachcheri premises from 7:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. on Monday, protesting that they be given suitable employment, said sources in Jaffna.
They said that though many of them had passed out of University in 1996, they should be considered as part of the 1995 batch since they were debarred from sitting their examinations due to displacement following Operation Jayasikurui. Representatives of the Union met with S. Shanmuganathan, Government Agent, Jaffna, T. Vaithilingam, Additional Government Agent (AGA) and S. Ganeshanandam, Secretary to the Northeast Provincial Council Governor, on Monday. Teachers unions, university and technical college students have expressed solidarity with the cause, said sources.
