Malteser International rehabilitates Trinco Children's Home

Boys' Dormitory of the Trincomalee Anpu Illam children home rehabilitated and expanded at an estimated cost of 2.9 million rupees with the funding of Malteser International, Order of Malta Worldwide Relief, was declared open Sunday morning, sources from Trincomalee said. Dr.Jurgen Clemens, Senior Desk Officer of the Malteser International, unveiled the plaque of the renovated building and Mr.Lawrence Oduma, Country Co-ordinator for Sri Lanka, declared open the dormitory by cutting the ribbon, sources said.

The Anpu Illam founded in the year 1985 has been sheltering about one hundred boys and girls who have lost one of both of their parents in the two decade old war in the Trincomalee district.

Guests were received at the entrance of the Children Home by officials of the management of the institution and children, sources said.

Ms Sithithevi Pathmanathan, President, Mr.C.Kumarakurubaran, Treasurer and several officials of the Management Council received the guests.

Guests and leading citizens of the town later participated in a meeting presided by Ms Sithithevi Pathmanathan.

Mr.Kumarakurubaran said that Malteser International has earlier also provided financial assistance to the renovation of a section of the children home. Now the Organization has provided funds for the second phase for the rehabilitation and expansion of the boys' dormitory. He thanked the Maltese International for its humanitarian gesture.

Dr.Jurgen Clemens and Mr.Lawrence Oduma said they hoped the second phase development of the institution would enhance the facilities of the children and ensure better future for them.

Mr.S.Gowrimuhunthan, Chairman of the Trincomalee Urban Council, Mr.K.Selvarajah, and Vice-Chairman of the UC also spoke. Mr.A.Parasuraman, Assistant Secretary of the Management Council proposed vote of thanks.

The event concluded with the cultural shows staged by children of the institution.
