Counselling Diploma Course commences in SE University

The Professional Diploma Course in Counselling for the Year 2006/07 in Tamil medium was inaugurated in the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka (SEUSL) under the Centre for Extension Studies (CES) Sunday evening. Eighty persons, including teachers, workers of non-governmental organizations and from other spheres have been admitted for the second batch of this course.

The course is being jointly conducted by the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka and the International War Related Trauma and Humanitarian Intervention Trust (IWTHI). Dr.A.G.Hussain Ismail, Vice-Chancellor of the SEUSL was the chief guest. Dr.Devanesan Nesiah, former Jaffna Government Agent and presently the IWTHI Trust President, and Mr.Cedric de Silva, Management Trustee were the guests of honour. Dr.K.Ishak, Director of the CES of the SEUSL presided. The event was held in the Oluvil Campus Hall of the SEUSL. At the commencement of the event the guests allowed some pigeons to fly to mark the urgent need for peace. Dr.Hussain Ismail said the SEUSL is the first university that has inaugurated a counselling course in Tamil medium in the country. He thanked IWTHI Trust for giving the opportunity to conduct this course. He added in future this course would be raised to advanced level and in due course a discipline offering a Degree in Counselling could be started in the university. The first batch of 66 students who underwent this one year course last academic year 2005-2006 passed out recently.
