Muslim civilian shot dead in Thoppur

Two masked men riding a motorbike shot dead Cassim Bawa Abdul Rahim,44, in Thoppur in Muttur division in Trincomalee district, around 6 a.m. Saturday, while he was returning home after morning prayers in a mosque in his village, Thoppur police said.

The police said they have detained a Muslim man with his motorbike in connection with the killing.

Muttur Magistrate Mr.M.Ganesharajah inspected victim's body at the Muttur district hospital, Saturday evening and recorded statements of two witnesses who were produced by the police.

The Magistrate further directed the Police to record the statement of the suspect and to submit a report on the next date of inquiry, 27 July, legal sources said.

The Magistrate directed the hospital authorities to hand over the body to his relatives after post-mortem examination, the sources said.
