The Mayor and the Members of the Jaffna Municipal Council (MMCs) requested the British High Commissioner in Sri Lanka, David Tatham, to persuade the British Government to intervene to resolve Sri Lanka's ethnic problem, said sources in Jaffna.
The High Commissioner and his party who were visiting Jaffna, were welcomed by Mayor P. Sivapalan (Tamil United Liberation Front) and MMC members from the Eelam Peoples' Revolutionary Liberation Front (EPRLF), Peoples' Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE), Eelam Peoples' Democratic Party (EPDP) and the TULF. The PLOTE and EPRLF members said that both the Sri Lanka Government (SLG) and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) should be involved in bringing about a solution to the war and asked the British Government to maintain links with the LTTE's London office for this purpose. The MMC members also asked the delegation to use its influence on the SLG to obtain compensation for traders who lost their goods when the Sri Lanka Air Force bombed Princess Kash, which was carrying cargo to Jaffna, said sources.
