Civilians cross open lines-ICRC

Since Monday, the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) facilitated a convoy of civilians going from Killinochchi to Vavuniya. The convoy consisted 243 persons, including 61 foreign citizens and 182 Sri Lankan nationals, said the press release of the ICRC Tuesday

The crossing from north to south took place at Omanthai, some 15 km north of Vavuniya. Omanthai is one of the official crossing points identified in the Ceasefire Agreement of 2002 between the Sri Lanka Government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), the press release added.

Already on Friday, August 18, 2006, again at Omanthai, the ICRC facilitated the crossing of around one thousand civilians going from south to north, the press release said.
