Swiss TRO sends fund for IDPs in Vaharai, Eachchilampathu

Swiss Tamil Rehabilitation Organization TRO) has donated a sum of Rupees Eight Hundred and Fifty Thousand as a first phase to provide urgent food and essential items to hundreds of thousands of internally displaced Tamil civilians now sheltered in temporary structures in LTTE held Eachchilampathu division in Trincomalee district and Vaharai division in Batticaloa district, TRO sources said.

The fund will be shared by Vaharai TRO and Muttur TRO for the maintenance of IDPs in their respective areas. About 12 thousand IDPs of around three thousand families are housed in schools and other temporary structures in Eachchilampathu division and about forty thousand of eight thousand families in Vaharai division.

TRO workers located in these two divisions are supplying cooked food and other essential items. In addition, Mercy Corps, USA based international non-governmental organization has been supplying cooking utensils, health and sanitation materials to these IDPs through TRO workers.

Government agencies have not yet started distributing relief to IDPs in Eachchilampathu and Vaharai. The ban imposed by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) taking food and other relief to Eachchilampathu through Mahindapura SLA camp checkpoint has not been lifted so far enabling NGOs and government agencies to take food.
