Civil and Military officials discuss restoring normalcy in Jaffna

Civil and Military Officials in Jaffna District held a discussion Wednesday, evening around 4.00 p.m. in the Palaly Military Base to find ways to restore normalcy in the peninsula where an abnormal atmosphere prevails with the imposition of curfew since the outbreak of fresh fighting between the Sri Lanka forces and LTTE.
A group of civil officials led by Mr.K.Ganesh, the Government Agent (GA) of Jaffna met with Major General Chandrasri, the Military Commander of Jaffna peninsula and discussed at length about normalizing the totally collapsed petroleum delivery, issuing essential food items brought in by ships, restoring the totally paralyzed public transport, improving communication facilities and relaxing the curfew to enable the smooth functioning of government offices. Col. Perera, the Civil Coordinator also participated in the discussion. The GA raised the issues of rescuing the civilians trapped near the Forward Defence Line area in Thenmaradchchi, imposing the curfew simultaneously in the whole peninsula, lifting the fishing ban and issuing special pass to the government servants to travel during curfew hours. However, the Army Commander did not allow the officers to talk about security related matters, a civil servant participated in the discussion said.
