Army releases mutilated bodies, warns families

[TamilNet, Thursday, 31 August 2006, 15:00 GMT]
The Sri Lanka Army released the mutilated bodies of 16 Tamil youth in Vavuniya Wednesday, claiming they were Tamil Tiger cadres. The genitals of some of the youth had been hacked off and the faces of some bodies had been burnt off by acid, hospital sources said. The bodies of 10 youths have been claimed by their familes in Vavuniya, who said the youth had gone missing after leaving for work. The LTTE has accepted the bodies of the remaining six to see if they are those of 7 cadres who went missing on patrol earlier this week.

The Army Tuesday displayed the bodies of sixteen youth and said they were LTTE cadres who attacked its front defence lines at Puvarasankulam in Vavuniya.

The SLA released the bodies in sealed containers Thursday. Families who sought to collect the bodies of youth who went missing on Tuesday were warned not to open the containers.

The bodies claimed were youths and were handed over for post-mortem at Vavuniya hospital on Tuesday.
Hospital sources said that the penises had been hacked off some of the bodies and other bodies had acid poured over the faces.

The families of the youths were from Thirunavatkulam, Pattaniyoor, Nelukkulam, Sundarapuram and Maravankulam expressed shock and dismay at the mutilations.

The LTTE said that they had agreed to receive the bodies of the remaining six to see if they were among 7 LTTE cadres who went missing whilst on routine patrol along the LTTE front line on Tuesday.
