About 4850 students studying in 26 Tamil schools
in villages located in Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) held areas have been badly affected. The second term examination for these students scheduled to be held in August was not held as the education authorities were unable to transport question papers and related learning materials due to the closure of the Uyilankulam checkpoint by the
Sri Lanka Army (SLA) since August 11.
Mannar Government Agent has contacted the Commander of the 21-2 Brigade in Thallady to allow the education authorities to transport question papers to schools in LTTE held areas, enabling to conduct the second term examination, sources said. Meanwhile the third academic year for schools has commenced. But students in LTTE held areas in Mannar district have not sat for the second term examination. In the meantime, the closure of Uyilankulam checkpoint has prevented teachers, principals and education officials who have been working in LTTE held area schools and education offices to report for duty from government controlled territory, sources said.
