Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and Liberation Tigers exchanged artillery fire from Thursday midnight until early morning Friday, shells falling within High Security Zones (HSZs) in Jaffna, and LTTE controlled Pallai and Pooneryn areas, sources in Jaffna said.
SLA controlled areas of Varany, Mirusuvil, Kodikamam. Atchelu, Palaly and Point Pedro were hit by intense artillery fire launched by the Liberation Tigers, sources said. Sri Lanka security forces are widely believed to be anticipating attacks by the LTTE staged from areas close to Pooneryn and Pallai, and the retaliatory fire by the SLA was directed towards these areas to neutralize the LTTE threat, sources said. Casualties or injuries to combatants and civilians are not known.
