JVP told not to interfere with SLFP-UNP talks

The main opposition United National Party (UNP) Saturday appealed to the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), a Marxist, Sinhala Nationalist party, not to interfere with the progress made by the two main political parties UNP and Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), main constituent of the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA), in reaching a consensus in solving the ethnic crisis, sources said.

Mr.Tissa Attanayake, UNP Assistant General Secretary at a press briefing Saturday made the above appeal in reply to statement made by Mr.Somawanse Amarasinghe, JVP leader at a meeting in Kurunegala Friday that he would dissolve the JVP if the SLFP and UNP reach a compromise on the question of solving the ethnic crisis, sources said.

Mr.Amarasinghe had blamed the SLFP and UNP for the present crisis.

Meanwhile, reports from Colombo speculated that JVP parliamentarian and former Presidential candidate, Nandana Gunatillake has decided to resign from his party.

The former JVP politburo member has cited "opportunistic policies" of his party as the reason for his decision to resign, reports said.
