A 25-year old farmer was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Athai, near Alvai 3 km west of Point Pedro Saturday morning, sources from Jaffna said. After nearly a week of absence of violence in Jaffna today's slaying following two other similar killings Friday appears to mark the resumption in arbitrary killings in the peninsula, sources added.
Ponniah Sreeharan, a father of two children, was shot dead in close range by gunmen WHO arrived in a motorbike at the victim's home, and escaped after shooting the victim, sources said. The Point-Pedro slaying brought the number of arbitrary killings to in Jaffna district during the August and September to 134, sources said. This number does not include deaths in Allaipiddy and Thenmaradchy areas due to shelling and mortar fire.
