Inquiry into death of sailorsTwo Sri Lankan Navy officers and five sailors appeared at the magistrate's court in Kayts today to give evidence on the death of two Navy personnel at the Velanai jetty on Friday.
It transpired during the proceedings that a sailor who was punished by his superiors had shot dead a colleague who had taunted him at the Velanai jetty and had then shot himself dead.
The dead sailors were identified as S.Wimalasena and S.Wijeratna
Estate workers strike to protest rapeMore than three thousand estate workers at Caterpillar Kola Patana in Nawalapitiya went on strike today and marched in strength to the estate to protest the rape of a young girl.
The girl, according to sources, was on her way home from a tution after school when a person from a nearby Sinhala village had waylaid her and raped her.
The bleeding girl had reached home and related the incident.
The striking workers marched to the estate this morning shouting slogans and demanding that the rapist be punished forthwith.
Girls caught watching porno moviesThree girls from a reputed school in Nelliady in Jaffna were taken to task by their parents and teachers this weekend for watching pornographic movies.
The girls had been watching blue movies in a house when a video tape had come stuck in the player. Unable to disentangle the pornorgraphic tape, the girls had to take the player to an electronics shop to set it right.
The shop owner, suspecting that something was amiss, had informed the girls' parents.
Parents and teachers at the Nelliady school are now investigating how the students acquired the pornographic tapes.
