Policeman injured in grenade attack in Batticaloa

Two unidentified armed men on motor cycle lobbed a hand grenade Saturday around 9:30 p.m. on the Kodaikallaru police sentry post in Kalavanchikudy police division in Batticaloa district seriously injuring a policeman who was rushed to Amparai District hospital, Kalavanchikudy police said. The policemen at the sentry point opened fire on the attackers but they managed to escape unhurt, added the police.
The injured policeman was identified as S. K. Kumara, 28. The four policemen at the sentry point had returned to their post after dinner around 9:30 p.m. when the gunmen lobbed the grenade, police sources said. Sunday, the Kalavanchikudy police cordoned off and searched the area surrounding the sentry post. No one was arrested.
