Unidentified attackers triggered a claymore mine at a vehicle convoy of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) near Puraporruki in Vadamaradchy along Point Pedro-Jaffna road at 12:30 p.m. Monday injuring six SLA soliders and one civilian seriously, sources in Jaffna said. The injured soldiers have been taken to Palaly Military Hospital. Condition of the injured civilian is not known.
Puraporruki is a residential village within the high security area 2 km north of Nelliady junction. Additional SLA troopers have been brought to the site of the explosion. Soldiers have cordoned off a large area surrounding Puraporukki and are conducting house to house search. SLA has stopped all vehicular traffic between Vallai checkpoint, the gateway to Vadamaradchy and Nelliady junction, local residents said. Vehicles, including those that transport unloaded provisions from Point Pedro jetty had to take the circuitous route from Vallai-Uduppidy- Valvettiturai road to reach Point Pedro. Residents of the area said the soliders have assaulted passengers entering Vadamaradchy at the Vallai checkpoint.
