The Liberation Tigers set off two claymore devices simultaneously at Valvettithurai in Jaffna yesterday around 3.40 p.m., killing one SLA soldier and wounding another.
One claymore exploded at Aathikoilady and the other at Vembady. No one was hurt in the latter explosion. Sources said that one civilian was also injured in the Aathikoilady blast which killed the soldier. The civilian was removed by the army to the Palaly base for treatment. An SLA vehicle had passed by the claymore mine at Vembady sometime before it went off said residents. The army cordoned off the Aathikoilady area and rounded up about 150 civilians for questioning. All of them were released later. Meanwhile, the SLA cordoned off and searched the Palai town centre as well last morning around 10.30 a.m. More than 300 hundred civilians were brought to the market grounds for screening. Everyone released in the afternoon around 4.30 p.m.
