Young man shot dead in Amparai

Unidentified armed men on a motor cycle shot dead a young man Friday around 9:00 a.m at Amman Temple road in Kalmunai, Amparai when he was returning on his bicycle after buying provisions in the market, said Kalmunai police, who recovered the dead body and brought it to Kalmunai base hospital for inquest into the death.
The victim was identified as Pillayanthamby Jeevakanthan, 26 of Division C on Amman Temple road in Kalmunai, hospital sources said. The armed men, who had followed Jeevakanthan and shot him dead on the spot, escaped from the site of the shooting, the police said. Motive of the killing is not known. Kalmunai is located 36 km south of Batticaloa town. Meanwhile, two unidentified armed youths on a motor cycle lobbed a hand grenade Friday around 11:05 a.m on three policemen standing guard at the main entrance of the Assistant Superintendent of Police office in Kalmunai town, the police said. The targeted policemen escaped injuries while the youths escaped unhurt though they were fired upon by the police.
