Two SLA troopers injured in Puthur grenade attack

Unidentified persons lobbed hand grenades on a Sri Lanka Army (SLA) sentry post near Puthur junction on the Jaffna-Point Pedro road Monday around 8:30 a.m injuring two SLA troopers, sources in Jaffna said. Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) in Jaffna visited the site of the attack and conducted investigations.

Meanwhile, due to the Heroes Day held Monday to pay homage for the young men and women who were killed during the Tamils Struggle for Freedom, daily activities of Jaffna peninsula almost ground to a halt with shops and other institutions closed. Students kept away from schools.

Most of the people in Jaffna town and in its environs observed Heroes Day in their houses privately in response to the request made by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

People living in rural areas of the peninsula were seen to be observing the Heroes Day without any restraint.

Some staff of government offices and corporations reporting for work in the morning left their offices after noon. Only a limited number of buses plied in the morning.

Many of the SLA sentry posts at key locations in the Jaffna peninsula were unmanned with most of the SLA troopers remaining in their camps, the sources added.

The customary SLA checking, at the points of entry and exit at the Jaffna Municipality boundaries however, continued.
