Food convoy to Vaharai stranded, parties blame each other for attacks

A convoy with humanitarian supplies towards Vaharai region, under siege by the Sri Lanka Army, was stopped at the SLA camp in Usanettam, south of Mankerny Army camp Tuesday morning by the soldiers. Both the parties, the Sri Lankan forces and the Tigers blamed each other for launching artillery and shell attacks, breaking a pre-agreed cessation of hostilities to facilitate the humanitarian supplies.

A LTTE cadre was killed in SLA artillery fire, said LTTE's Military Spokesman Irasiah Ilanthirayan.

"Despite a provocative artillery attack launched by the Sri Lanka Army on our positions from Kallaru SLA base, and mortar fire from Kirimichchai area, recently occupied by the Sri Lankan Army, our forces remained committed to a pre-agreed cessation of hostilities, on humanitarian basis, to facilitate the supplies," Mr. Ilanthirayan said.

SLA sources also claimed that LTTE artillery fire had killed a trooper and injured two in Kajuwatte SLA camp.
