SLA shoots dead civilian, arrests youth in Valaichenai

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troopers from the Meeravodai SLA camp lay in ambush and shot dead the father of five children Monday around 8:00 p.m at Meeravodai, a Tamil village in Valaichenai police division in Batticaloa, said Valaichenai police. The Police recovered the dead body and handed it over to Valaichenai Base hospital.

The victim was identified as Rasiah Manickavasagam, 59, a fishmonger.

Manickavasagam was shot dead on his way home after visiting his relatives.

The SLA, having shot dead Manickavasagam, arrested C. Yogan, a 27 year old youth from Meeravodai, implicating him with the killing of Manickavasagam, Meervodai residents said.

Meeravodai SLA had warned three days ago that anyone found on the roads after 7:00 p.m would be shot at, the residents added.

Meeravodai is located 30 km north of Batticaloa town.
