Jon Hansen Bauer, Norwegian special peace envoy to Sri Lanka, arrived in Colombo Wednesday night around 11:15 p.m. to attempt to revive peace talks between the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
The leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), Velupillai Pirapaharan, in his annual Heroes’ Day statement, expressed that the ceasefire agreement had become defunct with the ongoing military operation by the Sri Lankan Army by land, sea and aerial attacks on the Tamil homeland and the closure of all land routes to these areas. Hence Mr. Jon Hansen Bauer decided to pay an urgent visit to Sri Lanka to confer with both parties of the conflict about the latest development in the ground situation.
