Rajapakse, Wickremasinghe meet to discuss MoU

Sri Lanka's President Mahinda Rajapakse and Ranil Wickremasinghe, leader of the main opposition United National Party (UNP) Tuesday held a lengthy discussion at Temple Trees on the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), main constituent of the ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA), and UNP on identified issues giving top priority to solve the ethnic conflict, according to news report of the State-run Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC).



Ministers Maithiripala Sirisena, Mangala Samaraweera and Nimal Sripala de Silva participated with Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse in the discussion.

UNP parliamentarians Karu Jayasuriya, Rukman Senanayake and Jospeh Michael Perera accompanied Mr. Ranil Wickremasinghe.

Future action on factors concerning a permanent solution to the ethnic issue, current security situation and other matters mentioned in the SLFP-UNP Memorandum of Understanding were taken up for discussion, a statement of the Presidential Secretariat released after the meeting said.

The leaders decided to continue the discussion in the future and to submit the decisions arrived at to Rajapakse.

The future discussions, to be held in the Parliament complex, will be headed by Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake on behalf of the SLFP and Ranil Wickremasinghe, the Leader of the Opposition heading UNP, the source said.
