LTTE to observe Polio truce

The UNICEF in Jaffna said today that the Liberation Tigers have consented to two days of peace in the northeast, tomorrow and the day after, to enable the UN organisation to vaccinate children against Polio in the region.
The UNICEF also stated that the Liberation Tigers will observe two days of peace for the same purpose on Oct.23 and Oct.24 as well. The Sri Lankan government, however, gave no indication today whether it would reciprocate the LTTE's offer although the UN body has forwarded the LTTE's agreement to it The UNICEF representative in Jaffna Mrs.Penny Braune confirmed the LTTE's position in a letter she issued this evening. Her letter said "I have just received a call from UNICEF Colombo to advice that the LTTE have sent a letter to UNICEF Colombo agreeing to two days of tranquillity in order to facilitate the immunisation of children against polio. These days will be 18 and 19 of September and 23 and 24 of October. This letter has been forwarded by UNICEF Colombo to the government of Sri Lanka.
