Leaflets warn Jaffna Council members

[TamilNet, Saturday, 19 September 1998, 19:13 GMT]
Leaflets calling for the resignation of all the Jaffna municipal council members were reported to have been distributed throughout the peninsula on the night of September 18.

The leaflets, claiming to be from a group calling itself "Seekers of Tamil National Liberation," said that it wouldn't hesitate to take actions against those who fail to comply.

It further said that, "following the attack on the former Mayor, Sarojini Yogeswaran, we wrote to all the members individually, and urged them to resign their posts. Some of them complied and did as we said, but others, however, acted in a challenging manner. Therefore, we would not be sending separate letters to every member in the future, but will take action against them, when they fail to heed our call, no matter who they are."

The leaflets criticized the Government for trying to present a false image of normality in Jaffna to the world while imposing harsh military rule on the civilians. Those Tamil groups and Parties, that the leaflets said, who were assisting the government, also came under severe criticism.

"We feel sad to learn that in the latest attack, some civilians were caught despite our repeated warnings to these officials not to attend gatherings organized by the SL military, and would like to express our condolences to those affected.

"We yet again warn that attacks would be inevitable in these places, and urge the Tamil speaking people to keep away from such places, and assist us in the struggle," the leaflets further said.
