Ranil Wickremasinghe, leader of the main opposition United National Party (UNP), Thursday said the smooth implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), main constituent of the United peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) government and the UNP, was under threat by forces opposed to a peaceful resolution to the ethnic conflict.
Mr.Ranil Wickremasinghe was addressing a briefing Thursday morning held at the UNP headquarters "Sri Kotha" in Colombo. One of the key issues in the MoU between the UNP and SLFP is to work for a peaceful resolution to the ethnic conflict, he said. The political solution found should satisfy the aspirations of all communities in Sri Lanka, he added. The MoU signed between the SLFP and UNP on 23 October states:
"United National Party reiterates its commitment to extend support to the Government in the pursuit of a negotiated settlement to the on-going conflict while opposing terrorism in all its manifestations and upholding human rights."
