The Sri Lankan Army (SLA) severely assaulted and shot dead an Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP) cadre this evening around 6 p.m. in Chavakachcheri in Jaffna following the clash with the PLOTE said a spokesman of the group in the north.
He said that Selvam Nandakumar who was shot dead by the SLA is one of its senior cadres and was a member of the Pachchilaipalli Pradheshiya Sabhas. The Jaffna office of the EPDP issued a statement condemning the murder. The group threatened to pull out of all the Pradheshiya Sabhas (local government bodies) in Jaffna if the army did not taken immediate action to punish the soldiers who were responsible for the assault and murder of Nandakumar. EPDP sources said that he was killed by soldiers angered by the PLOTE opening fire on the army today. The condition of one of the soldiers shot by the PLOTE is said to be critical said sources. The army is now searching for the leader of the organisation in Chavakachcheri who was earlier this year accused by the SLA of harbouring the Liberation Tigers.
