Gunfire ambush kills Sub-Inspector in Mannar, civilian killed in Police fire

A 19-year-old Sinhala bus passenger was killed when Sri Lankan police opened fire after a group of attackers launched a gunfire-ambush killing a Sub-Inspector of Police at a police post, 27 km southeast of Mannar town, along the Mannar Madawachchi Road around 8:15 a.m. Friday. Two civilians, seated in the Mannar Colombo bus, were wounded.
The civilian victim, seated in the Mannar Colombo bus, was identified as Indika Gunawardene. The Police Sub-Inspector killed in the gunfire was identified as Senaratne, 45. A woman and a young man were rushed to Murunkan district hospital and a wounded policeman was taken to Mannar General Hospital for treatment. The gunfire-ambush took place at Sector 5 Poiice post at Isaimalaithalvu, located 5 km southeast of Murunkan. Tension prevailed in Murunkan and the traffic along the Mannar Madawachchi Road remained blocked for 2 hours.
