The Sri Lankan Army (SLA) cordoned off Nelliady from 7.30 this morning on a tip off about the presence of some Liberation Tigers in the area. The army was on a house to house search for the LTTE suspects in Nelliady, Murugan 'Kovil' (temple) road and Pandiththalai.
Troops warned civilians over loud hailers not to leave the area. More than five hundred soldiers were deployed in the search operation which was on until this afternoon. Meanwhile, a boy who went from Chunnakam to gather firewood in Alaveddy lost a leg below the knee when an anti personnel land mine blew up on him this morning around 10 a.m. The boy, Appukkutty Subaskaran, 21, ekes out a living by selling firewood he collects daily in the abandoned parts of Alaveddy and nearby areas said a relative who brought him to hospital.
