LTTE shells hit Manthuvil Base

Artillery shells launched by the Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) hit the 52 Brigade Head Office of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) situated at Manthuvil in Thenmaradchy region in Jaffna district around 12:00 noon Tuesday. Two shells fell inside the Base and one outside it. Ambulance was seen rushing out of the Base towards Palaly Military Hospital following the attack, civilians of the area said.

Although it is believed that there were casualties among the soldiers, the SLA has not given any details so far.

No civilian casualties reported.

Manthuvil Brigade Head Quarters was transferred to Varani some months ago.

After Varani and other SLA camps in the Kodikamam were threatened by LTTE's artillery attack recently, the Brigade Head Quarters and artillery pads were again shifted to Manthuvil.

Manthuvil Base encompasses an area that includes many civilian houses from which the owners have been evicted, and arable land.
