Court extends remand for detained woman Journalist, waits AG report

Colombo Chief Magistrate Ms Sarojini Kusala Abeyawardene Friday ordered further remand till March 23 for Mounasamy Parameswary, a journalist of Sinhala weekly Mawbima, waiting for the report of the Attorney General. Parameswary was produced in court Friday, legal sources in Colombo said.

The Terrorist Investigation Unit of the Police submitted a report to court that investigation into the arrest of the suspect was completed and a report was sent to the Attorney General for his decision, sources said.

Parameswary told the court that the police arrested her when she was on an assignment by her newspaper. Police did not give any reason for her arrest even after several months in detention and remand.

The journalist was arrested in Wellawatte and was detained first for about sixty days. Her relatives and lawyers were not allowed to meet her in detention during the first sixty days. The court later ordered detention for another sixty days on a report by the police, sources said.
