JUSU condemns GoSL attacks on East, raises funds to help refugees

Jaffna University Student Union (JUSU) condemned the pre-planned attack by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) on the people of Eastern province and demanded that the Sri Lanka government to immediately stop the attacks on civilians creating a humanitarian crisis, during a meeting held at the Kailasapathy Hall in Jaffna university around 10:30 a.m. Monday. The JUSU also urged the student community to unite to help the people displaced by the SLA offensives.



JUSU representatives presiding the meeting, accused the Government of executing planned attacks on eastern province people and forcibly displacing more than 150,000.

Kailasapathy Hall was filled to capacity with undergraduates including those from eastern province. Many students spoke in the meeting that lasted more than two hours.

The speakers stressed on the need for the International humanitarian organizations to act immediately as the Government of Sri Lanka has failed to help the affected people.

A fund raising programme too was officially initiated at the meeting to provide help for the displaced people of the east and structured the programme to include efforts of representatives of various civil society institutions and organizations in Jaffna district, covering the whole Jaffna peninsula.

"While the Sri Lanka Government is attempting to drive out Tamil people from the east, the protest meeting shows to the International Community that the students of the North and East, stand united," the JUSU representatives told the media.
