SLA imposes fishing ban in Vadamarachchy seas

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers extended the temporary ban imposed Saturday indefinitely in Vadamaradchy north affecting more than 4 000 fishing families living along the coastal villages from Valvettiththurai in Vadamarachchy North to Manatkadu in Vadamarachchy East, fisheries sources said.
Sri Lanka Navy gunboats fired at the fishing crafts in the seas on Saturday and chased away the fishermen. The armed forces manning the checkpoints and bunkers along the coastal area too fired at the fishermen engaged in fishing without any prior warning. The armed forces have not so far set any deadline for the resumption of fishing, fisheries sources said. The Security Forces deployed along whole of Vadamaradchy north coastal areas were placed on alert Saturday anticipating a Sea-Tiger attack. However, No skirmishes occurred on that day.
