Following fire fight between Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) and Sea Tigers in the lagoon seas south of Jaffna Peninsula, Tuesday afternoon, SLN has imposed fishing ban on fishermen from coastal areas of Pashaiyoor, Gurunagar, and Navanthurai Wednesday, sources from Jaffna said. More than 3000 fishermen have been affected by the ban.
Fishermen were blocked from entering sea at the sentry points along the shores of the littoral villages at the southern shores, according to fisheries spokesperson. SLN has informed that the ban will be in effect until further notice. Fisheries sources added that increased SLN patrol activity was observed in the lagoon area Wednesday. SLN imposed a fishing ban for nearly month from the 22nd February which marked the completion of 5 years from the signing of the Ceasefire Agreement fearing attack by Sea Tigers via the southern coast. The ban was lifted later in March.
