Five civilians die in Batticaloa boat mishap

Five civilians, including a school girl, died when the boat in which they were traveling capsized due to heavy wind in Valaichchenai lagoon near Santhively in Eravur Police division in Batticaloa district, Tuesday afternoon.
Eravur Police was able to recover 3 bodies until Tuesday night. The bodies Ms. Maheswary Rasarathinam, 38, and Mrs. Puspharani Ailesapillai, 42, and the school girl Ropathy Ganeshamoorthy, 13, were handed over to Eravur District hospital for autopsy. All the victims were from Santhively area. Fishermen of the area and Eravur police are searching for the remaining bodies. The incident happened when the victims were traveling in a fishing boat to visit their relatives in the village of Thihiliveddai that lies across the lagoon. People of Santhively have many of their relatives living across the lagoon and they also own cultivation and
pastures in the region. Santhively is situated 25 km north of Batticaloa.
